In January 1982, I visited Devil’s Island, the formidable fabled prison off the coast of French Guyana. My trip, on behalf of The Daily Telegraph, was principally to witness a take-off by Ariane, the European Space Agency rocket designed to break the American monopoly on satellite launching.
